Cargill Turkey Still Making People Sick

The Cargill turkey Salmonella outbreak that killed one and sickened nearly 130 people across 34 states since late February appears to still be sickening people. This, despite two massive recalls totaling more than 37 million pounds of meat. MSNBC says that illnesses have been reported as recently as September 13, citing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of concern, say health officials, is that consumers might have

Salmonella Confirmed In Cargill Ground Turkey

Salmonella in a sample of Cargill Inc. ground turkey recalled earlier this month has been confirmed to be a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, Bloomberg Business Week said. Cargill recalled 185,000 pounds of potentially contaminated ground turkey over concerns the poultry was tainted with the dangerous pathogen that is resistant to four different antibiotics: Ampicillin, gentamicin, streptomycin, and tetracycline, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

In August, Cargill recalled another 35.7 million pounds of ground turkey from the same plant in Springdale, Arkansas. Both recalls were deemed Class I actions by the FSIS, which means that the recalls represent a health hazard situation in which there exists a reasonable probability that the use of the recalled product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. Cantaloupe Listeria Outbreak Deadliest In A Decade

With as many as 16 people reportedly dead from potentially contaminated Colorado cantaloupes, the ongoing, multi-state, Listeria monocytogenes outbreak has become the deadliest in over 10 years.

At last count, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 72 illnesses, including 13 deaths, which are being connected to the contaminated produce, said The Associated Press (AP). Another three deaths are under investigation by state and local officials, the AP added. The figures were released yesterday, said the AP, and included new confirmation on 5 additional deaths in Kansas (1), Missouri (1), Nebraska (1), and Texas (2).

SSRIs, Blood Thinner Combo Poses Risks

Another study has revealed a link between adverse reactions and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants. This time, research has linked SSRIs, when taken with blood thinners, with increased bleeding risks.

Patients who have suffered a heart attack and are prescribed a combination of an anti-platelet medication—for instance, Plavix or aspirin—and an SSRI—such as Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, and Lexapro—experience increased risks, versus patients only taking anti-clotting medications, said USNews. The study, conducted at Canada’s McGill University, appears in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. (more…)

Alli, Xenical Face European Safety Review

Four suspected cases of “serious liver toxicity” are prompting the European Medicines Agency to conduct a safety review of the popular weight loss medications Alli and Xenical.

Orlistat is the active ingredient in both Xenical and Alli. Xenical, sold via prescription only, is manufactured by Roche and contains 120 milligrams of orlistat. The over-the-counter (OTC) Alli, marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, contains 60 mg. Xenical was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999 and Alli was approved in 2007. (more…)

Canada Issues Recommendations For Plavix, PPIs

Canada just issued recommendations for Plavix (clopidogrel) and heartburn drugs called PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) in light of new information indicating that although PPIs do interact with Plavix, not all PPIs impact efficacy in the same way. Health Canada said it is advising health professionals and patients with the updated recommendations.

Plavix is typically prescribed to patients with a history of heart-related problems, such as heart attack and stroke, to prevent future events, said Health Canada. The blood thinner been linked to some significant adverse reactions according to its label, specifically gastrointestinal and cerebral hemorrhaging, as well as eye (conjunctival, ocular, retinal) bleeding, musculoskeletal bleeding, fatal intracranial bleeding, respiratory tract bleeding, and skin bleeding. VA Halts Avastin Eye Injections Over Infection Risk

Following a number of serious eye infection reports, some leading to blindness, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) said it has stopped using Avastin to treat wet age-related macular degeneration.

Roche’s Avastin, approved as a cancer drug, is being used more and more to treat the debilitating eye disease, which is an off-label use. Avastin and Lucentis, both made by Roche’s Genentech unit, work similarly; however, Avastin only costs around $50/dose, while Lucentis, which is approved for the eye disorder, costs a significantly higher $2,000/dose. But when compounding pharmacies repackage Avastin into the smaller doses needed for eye injections, the drug can become contaminated with bacteria. (more…)

Lawsuit Claims Mercedes-Benz M156 Engines Are Defective

A punitive class action lawsuit has been filed against Mercedes-Benz manufacturer, Daimler AG, over its high-performance M156 6.2-liter, AMG, V8 engines. The lawsuit claims that the engines are defective and subject to early wear and failure, said Law360. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in New Jersey federal court. The lawsuit alleges that, in 2008, Cedric Chan of California leased his pre-owned 2007 E63 AMG from a California dealer. Soon after, he complained of “loud, ticking noises from under the hood” and said the car suffered from an oil pressure drop, said Law360. When he brought his E63 in for repairs last year, mechanics found that the left-side camshafts and lifters were prematurely worn and needed replacement, according to Law360. Chan said he paid $4,600 on engine repairs to the left side of his car and, when the right-side engine had problems indicative of premature camshaft and lifter wear in June 2010, he traded the car for a $25,000 loss, said the lawsuit. Lawsuits Challenge Fracking Bans In NY Communities

Two lawsuits seek to overturn fracking bans in Upstate New York. Lawsuits were filed against zoning laws in the towns of Middlefield and Dryden NY and more are expected as more areas seek to ban the natural gas extraction process and more areas are targeted for natural gas extraction.

Hydraulic fracturing, popularly known as fracking, is the controversial process by which a cocktail of water and chemicals—some toxic and carcinogenic—are shot into shale wells to release gas for harvesting. Promises of domestic energy use and increased employment can overshadow environmental catastrophes; long-term, life-threatening illnesses; and community disruption and devastation. (more…)

Another Study Finds Cell Phones Affect Brain

Another cell phone study, this one out of Turku, Finland, has revealed that cell phone use does, in fact, affect the brain. A significant finding amid the controversy surrounding the extremely popular devices. PET measurements were taken on 13 young, healthy males who were exposed to the GSM signal for 33 minutes each, explained Science Daily. The study confirmed that glucose metabolism in the temporoparietal and anterior temporal areas of the brain hemisphere closest to the device’s antenna becomes suppressed by GSM mobile telephone electromagenetic fields, said Science Daily.
