Wyoming Explosion Kills Three at Oil Production Facility

Three workers are dead and remain unidentified, a result of Monday’s Wyoming oilfield explosion. The blast led to a 10-acre fire, according to an oil company spokesman. The Seattle Times reported that the contract workers’ bodies are being sent to Colorado for autopsies to positively identify the three who were working for Samson to restore production at the site. The men were laying a fuel line that was supplying a heater treatment facility. The facility, said Dennis Neill, a Samson Resources Co. spokesman, separates oil and water pumped from the ground. Johnson & Johnson’s Use of Contractors to Handle DePuy Hip Implant Recall Raises Questions

Following a massive, global recall of its metal-on-metal DePuy hip replacement systems, Johnson & Johnson, parent company of the DePuy unit, has hired Broadspire Services to manage the recall of its defective DePuy ASR hip implants.

Mass Device noted amid the fall-out from thousands of lawsuits, Johnson & Johnson hired a third party to both limit its financial outlay and patients’ access to replacement hip devices. Triclosan Worries Spell Trouble for Dial Complete Soap

The Antimicrobial chemical triclosan is causing problems for the makers of Dial Complete. According to The New York Times, marketing for Dial Complete hand soap touts its germ-killing abilities, asserting that the inclusion of triclosan allows the soap to kill more germs than other brands. But Dial Complete is under fire from consumers, who have filed at least 10 federal class action lawsuits alleging that these germ-killing claims are unproven and misleading. The lawsuits, which were recently consolidated in a multidistrict litigation and transferred to U.S. District Court, District of New Hampshire, also allege that triclosan has been tied to antibiotic resistance.

Triclosan, originally developed as a surgical scrub, is now most often found in antibacterial soaps, sanitizers and body washes, toothpaste, medical devices, clothing, kitchenware, furniture, toys, cutting boards, and diaper bags, to name just some. Companies that market triclosan products claim they are safe, but the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) disagrees and registered triclosan as a pesticide. The EPA even rated triclosan as a human health and environmental risk. (more…)

Morgantown Residents Want Fracking Ban Decision Appealed

Earlier this month, a Monongalia County, West Virginia judge overturned an ordinance seeking a ban on hydraulic fracturing—fracking—in or near Morgantown city limits. Now, some residents of Morgantown are seeking an appeal of the ban invalidation, said the State Journal.

“Your leadership on this issue is critical not just to Morgantown, but to the entire state,” said Kathleen Cash, leader of West Virginia for a Moratorium on Marcellus, said when she spoke before Morgantown City Council on August 16, urging them to appeal Monongalia County Circuit Judge Susan Tucker’s decision to overturn the city’s ordinance, reported the State Journal.

Fracking is the environmentally devastating process of shooting a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals—often dangerous and carcinogenic—into shale to release natural gas. This ban, passed by the Morgantown City Council for wells within one mile of the city’s limits was the state’s third; similar bans were passed in Lewisburg and Wellsburg, said the State Journal.

This ban came after the state allowed Northeast Natural Energy to frack two gas wells in the Marcellus shale upstream of the drinking water intake that supplies some 90,000 residents in and near Morgantown, said the State Journal. At that time, residents advised the council that toxic frack flowback spills could contaminate the Monongahela River and contaminate drinking water. The Morgantown Utility Board worked for additional permit conditions with Northeast to protect the water supply; however, critics feel the move is lacking and residents are worried that, among other issues, air quality at a school and city are in danger with increased industry and truck traffic, said the State Journal.

Northeast sued to stop the ban and on August 12, Judge Tucker overturned the ban saying that it is the state’s responsibility to regulate oil and gas activities. Meanwhile, said the State Journal, Northeast is drilling its second well and is scheduled to begin fracking next month. The city has just four months to appeal the overturn with the state Supreme Court, said Brent Burton, Morgantown’s Assistant Staff Attorney.
