Panel Releases Report on Toyota Recall

A Toyota Motor Corp. advisory panel recently issued a report detailing the company’s operations in connection to the auto recall in 2009 and 2010. In March 2010, Toyota President Akio Toyoda created the North American Quality Advisory Panel in response to the recall of millions of autos in the U.S. and abroad. The panel, led by former Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater, reviewed the company’s operations for more than a year before releasing a detailed report. Bloomberg.com reported flaws linked to unintended acceleration, specifically, floor mates at risk of jamming accelerators and sticky gas pedals sparked the recall. Toyota paid $48.8 million in fines and the company president, along with other officials, was called before Congress. (more…)

Johnson & Johnson Loses Children’s Motrin Lawsuit

A Johnson & Johnson (J&J) unit was held liable for the injuries of a 13-year-old girl and must pay the family $10 million in damages. On May 20, a Philadelphia jury found Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Products (McNeil) liable for the injuries of Brianna Maya, now 13, who was left blind in one eye and suffered burns over 84 percent of her body after taking Children’s Motrin, reported Bloomberg.com.

The jury deliberated for 10 hours over two days before returning a verdict in favor of the plaintiff who, in 2000, took Motrin to treat a fever and cough when she was 3 1/2. According to Bloomberg, the family sought approximately $5 million in damages to cover their daughter’s medical bills and other expenses. (more…)

Electromagnetic Waves from Cell phones May Diminish Sperm Count, Quality

Study results suggest the electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones can lower male sperm count. In March, a recent study published in the online version of the journal Andrologia, followed 2,110 men attending a fertility clinic in Australia from 1993 to 2007. Researchers concluded “results showed that cell phone use negatively affects sperm quality in men.”

Semen analysis was performed on all patients and revealed a “significant difference” between the sperm counts of men who used their cell phones and men who did not, reported The Vancouver Sun. Researchers found cell phone use lowered levels of the luteinizing hormone, which is an important male reproductive hormone secreted from the brain. (more…)

Birth Defect Study Inconclusive on Topamax

A recent study was unable to determine if pregnant women who take the antiepileptic drug Topamax are at risk for having children with major birth defects. The Danish study appeared today in the Journal of the American Medical Association and tested the association between fetal exposure to antiepileptic drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy and the risk of birth defects.

The study included data on 837,795 live births occurring in Denmark between January 1996 and September 2008, including 1,532 women taking a second-generation antiepileptic drug during their first trimester. (more…)

Children’s Acetaminophen Dosing Should be Based on Weight, FDA Advisory Panel Says

On Wednesday, health advisors unanimously recommended that pediatric doses of acetaminophen be based on children’s weight. The panel advised the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that a child’s weight is the most accurate way to determine the proper dose. The advisers noted most over-the-counter manufacturers include dosing tables with both weight and age, but emphasized weight is the preferred method.

The panel also recommended that dosing instructions be added to labels of fever reducing medication for children under the age of 2. The Associated Press reported that in a 21-0 vote, the panel called for adding dosing instructions for children 6 months to 2 years old to medicines such as Children’s Tylenol and similar products. Currently, these labels only include children age 2 and up. Labels for kids under 2 only advise parents “to ask a doctor.” (more…)
