New York Fracking Moratorium Makes it Through State Assembly

The New York State Assembly has finally approved a moratorium on fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, in the state. Such a moratorium was already approved by the state Senate over the summer.

Late Monday night, the Assembly voted 93-43 to approve the measure, which bans fracking until May 15, 2011. According to a report on WBNG, the bill wasn’t on the Assembly’s agenda Monday in a special session called by Governor David Paterson, but after that meeting wrapped up, the Assembly opened a regular session to vote on it. Tylenol Maker Cited for Issues at Puerto Rico Plant – Again

For the second time this year, a drug making facility operated by Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit in Puerto Rico has been cited by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for quality issues. According to a report in The New York Times, it does not appear that McNeil has yet fixed many issues cited in a warning letter the agency issued last January.

The Puerto Rico plant made millions of bottles of Tylenol, Motrin and other products that were recalled at the beginning of this year. (more…)

Are DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Hip Implant Problems the Result of Metal Poisoning?

If you were the recipient of one of DePuy Orthopaedic’s recalled ASR XL Acetabular hip implants and have experienced problems, you could be a victim of metallosis – or metal poisoning. Metallosis can cause an immune response that can lead to bone destruction, as well as the extensive formation of noncancerous tumors called granulomas.

In August, a DePuy hip recall was issued worldwide involving ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur. Only the ASR XL Acetabular System was approved for use in the US. The recall was issued after data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales showed that 1 out of every 8 patients (12%-13%) who had received the recalled devices had to undergo revision surgery within five years of receiving it. A hip implant should last for 15 years or so. (more…)

FDA Aims to Make External Defibrillators Safer

External defibrillators, medical devices used to deliver a high-energy shock to the heart in people who have suffered sudden cardiac arrest, are often defective, according to a new Food & Drug Administration (FDA) analysis. The agency has decided to launch a new initiative to make external defibrillators safer.

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are found in public settings and increasingly in homes, airports and office buildings. More complex external defibrillators are used in hospitals by trained health care professionals. During the past five years, the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) has received more than 28,000 medical device reports associated with the failures of external defibrillators. In that same period, there have been 68 recalls of the devices. (more…)

Judge Rejects Motion to Dismiss Camp LeJeune Toxic Water Lawsuit Again

A lawsuit that could impact the legal rights of people who lived and worked at the Camp LeJeune Marine Corps base between the 1950s and 1980s is being allowed to go forward. Last week, a federal judge for the second time rejected the US government’s request that a lawsuit filed by an Iowa woman that alleges she developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma because of toxin-laced water at Camp LeJeune.

Laura Jones, who hails from Iowa, lived at Camp LeJeune in the 1980s when her husband was stationed there. She was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2003. Jones attests in her suit that she only learned in 2005 about the toxic chemicals and organic solvents that were in the water she drank on base could have caused her cancer. (more…)

Gianvi Side Effects Could Include Blood Clots, Stroke, Heart Attacks, Gall Bladder Problems

While Yaz lawsuits against Bayer has made many people aware of the dangerous Yaz side effects, another contraceptive with the same risks is flying under the radar. That drug, Teva Pharmaceuticals’ Gianvi, is nothing more than a generic form of Yaz.

Both Gianvi and Yaz contain a synthetic form of progestin called drospirenone, which may be associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and gallbladder disease. Adverse Events reported to the FDA involving drospirenone birth control pills include heart arrhythmias, electrolyte imbalance, hyponatremis, hyperkalemia, hyperkalemic arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, bradycardia, myocardial infarction, stroke, transient ischemic attack, blood clots, embolisms, and sudden death. Is the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Knee Replacement Defective?

The Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex knee replacement device has come under scrutiny by researchers who say it is prone to early failure. This past March, data was presented at an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons conference that indicated that 36 percent of the Zimmer NexGen patients examined after two years showed signs of the replacement knee loosening. The same study, which involved 108 patients, also found that nearly 9 percent of the Zimmer NexGen patients examined after two years required revision knee surgery due to loosening and pain.

Since it was brought to market in 2003, more than 150,000 Zimmer NexGen knee implants have been sold. Zimmer’s NexGen CR-Flex knee device is a synthetic device used to cap the thigh bone (femur) where it connects with the tibia at the knee. Unlike traditional knee implants, the CR-Flex is made of a porous fiber metal and a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy and is not attached using cement. (more…)

“Drug Holidays” Being Prescribed for Bisphosphonate Users

It seems concerns about the safety of Fosamax and similar bone drugs known as bisphosphonates have some doctors reconsidering their long-term use. Just last month, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) added warnings to the labels of Fosamax and other oral bisphosphonates after studies showed long-term use of the drugs could be linked to a rare type of thigh fracture. The drugs are also known for their association with osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), or dead jaw syndrome.

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, some doctors are starting to tell at least some of their patients to go on a “drug holiday” from bisphosphonates like Fosamax. (more…)
