ADHD Study Findings Manipulated to Put Positive Spin on Drug Therapy

Doctors and parents may have been misled about the safety and effectiveness of the  medications used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).   According to The Washington Post, the  recently published findings of the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children (MTA) indicate that such drugs are no more effective than other treatments in the long-term, and and may also stunt childrens’ growth.  But when  initials findings  of the MTA study were released in 1999 and 2007,  ADHD drugs were presented in a much more positive light.

The  MTA study was designed to test whether children diagnosed with ADHD do better when treated with drugs, with drugs plus talk therapy, with talk therapy alone or with routine medical care alone.   The study’s purportedly positive findings are one of the reasons the use of ADHD drugs has exploded in the past several years.    In 2004, physicians wrote 28.3 million prescriptions for ADHD drugs; last year, they wrote 39.5 million, the Post said. Toxic Chinese Drywall Plaguing Virginia Developer

A Virginia builder has confirmed that some of its homes were built with defective Chinese drywall.  The Dragas Companies is currently in the process of inspecting homes it built in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, and the developer is also paying to fix homes with imported drywall and  helping residents relocate for a few months while the work is being done.

In a statement Monday, The Dragas Companies said it determined that the imported drywall was installed in homes in two of its developments: The Hampshires at Greenbrier in Chesapeake and in Cromwell Park in Virginia Beach.  It  “appears to emit elevated levels of sulfur compounds that may corrode air conditioning coils, and may damage other mechanical and electrical systems over time,” the statement said.  Dragas said the drywall was imported by a U.S. supplier in 2006 and installed by a local subcontractor without its  knowledge.  The drywall may have been used in as many as 60 Dragas homes.
