The list of recalls related to a nationwide salmonella outbreak has hit 165. According to the Food & Drug Administration, more than 31 million pounds of peanut butter and peanut paste made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) have been recalled. As of Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said 488 people in 43 states have become ill with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium. The outbreak may have also contributed to six deaths, the CDC said.
The FDA has set up a searchable database on its website where consumers can keep track of the ever-growing list of salmonella recalls. The agency is also warning consumers to avoid eating any foods with peanut butter until the salmonella investigation is complete. However, the agency also said that peanut butters sold in retail stores are safe. That’s because PCA only supplied peanut butter and paste to food service firms and institutions. (more…)
