More Peanut Butter Salmonella Recalls

The list of recalls related to a nationwide salmonella outbreak has hit 165.  According to the Food & Drug Administration, more than 31 million pounds of peanut butter and peanut paste made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) have been recalled. As of Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said 488 people in 43 states have become ill with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium.  The outbreak may have also contributed to six deaths, the CDC said.

The FDA has set up a searchable database on its website where consumers can keep track of the ever-growing list of salmonella recalls.  The agency is also warning consumers to avoid eating any foods with peanut butter until the salmonella investigation is complete.  However, the agency also said that peanut butters sold in retail stores are safe. That’s because PCA only supplied peanut butter and paste to food service firms and institutions. (more…)

Peanut Butter Recalled in Latest Salmonella Outbreak

A salmonella outbreak has resulted in another peanut butter recall.  This time, King Nut Companies Inc. is recalling peanut butter sold under the King Nut and Pride Label’s after one container was found to be tainted with salmonella.

This would not be the first time tainted peanut butter has been implicated in a salmonella outbreak.  In February 2007, another salmonella outbreak prompted a recall of ConAgra’s Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butters. Those tainted peanut butters were  ultimately blamed for  600 cases of salmonella poisoning across the country. ConAgra faulted a leaky roof and malfunctioning sprinkler system at its production facility for causing the Salmonella contamination. The plant in Sylvester, Georgia was closed due to the recall, but reopened later that summer. (more…)

Death Risk Increased when Alzheimer’s Patients Treated with Anti-Psychotics

A British study has found that  Risperdal, Thorazine and other anti-psychotic drugs can double the risk of death when they are used to treat Alzheimer’s disease patients.  The authors of the study concluded that the risk of using anti-psychotic drugs in these patients likely outweighs there benefits.

This is just the latest study to show a correlation between anti-psychotic drugs and a higher death rate in Alzheimer’s patients.  According to a report in the Associated Press, no one knows exactly why this association exists, but some surmise that they could be damaging to the brain.  Another theory is that their sedative effects make patients less mobile, which can make them more vulnerable to infection, the Associated Press said.  (more…)

According to the CPSC, there have been 19 additional incidents of crib slats breaking. In nine of these incidents, consumers reported that their infant or toddler broke the slat while in the crib. In addition, a 22-month-old child fell through the gap between the crib slats when a slat broke. No injuries have been reported. (more…)
