New York Consumers Warned Boiled Horse Mackerel May Pose Botulism Risk

Consumers in New York who purchased Boiled Horse Mackerel sold by Bao Ding Seafood of New York City have been warned not to consume the product. The Boiled Horse Mackerel is being recalled because of a potential botulism risk. Anyone who has this product should return it to the place of purchase.

The potential botulism problem was discovered by the New York State Dept. of Agriculture and Market food inspector during a routine inspection. Subsequent analysis of the product by food lab personnel confirmed the fish was not eviscerated prior to processing. (more…)

Another New Era Canning Botulism Recall

Another vegetable recall has been issued by the New Era Canning Company over botulism fears.   It is the fourth New Era vegetable recall since late December.

This time, New Era of New Era, Michigan is recalling all cans of vegetable products in #10 cans—large cans containing between six and seven pounds—which may have been processed under conditions which could have led to contamination by Clostridium botulinum, the bacterial that causes botulism, a possibly life-threatening illness. According to the New Era vegetable recall notice issued by the Food & Drug Administrion,w hile the UPC code on the can label may be helpful, customers must examine the lot code on the can end to determine whether the can is subject to recall since some distributors may purchase these products from multiple suppliers. The majority of these products were sold nationwide to food service customers; however, some may have been purchased by consumers. The can codes may be embossed or printed on one of the can ends; some cans may be missing codes and should be assumed to be under the recall. New Era Green Bean Recall Sparks Fears of Botulism Outbreak

A canned green bean recall has been issued amid botulism fears. New Era Canning Company in Michigan said Friday that it was voluntarily recalling 1,026 cans of green beans because they may be contaminated with bacteria that cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.  New Era Canning Company said it was recalling 171 cases of GFS (Gordon Food Service) Fancy Blue Lake Cut Green Beans with the lot code 19-H-7FL and UPC 939-0111-873.  Each case contained six cans in six-pound, five-ounce sizes.  The canned green beans were distributed to food service customers in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia and were sold through GFS Marketplace stores in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.  The potential contamination was discovered through testing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Clostridium botulinum can cause life-threatening illness or death; however, no illnesses have been reported to date.  Consumers should not eat the beans even if they do not look or smell spoiled.  “New Era Canning in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Michigan Department of Agriculture is thoroughly evaluating all processes and procedures to determine the cause of the problem,” the company said.
