Hash Browns Recalled for Listeria

Giant Eagle, a grocery store chain based in Pennsylvania is recalling frozen hash browns because there is a chance they may be contaminated with Listeria.

This recall involves Giant Eagle and Food Club brand frozen loose hash browns. According to the recall notice, the independent and unrelated manufacturer of the hash browns has been informed of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in products made in the same facility as the recalled items. Tylenol, Motrin, Rolaids, Benedryl and St. Joseph’s Aspirin Recalled

Motrin, Tylenol, Rolaids, Benedryl and St. Joseph’s Aspirin are being recalled today by Johnson & Johnson unit McNeil Consumer Healthcare because they may be tainted with a chemical that causes a moldy smell, and could cause stomach illness.

Any smell is likely the result of contamination with trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. The source of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole is believed to be the breakdown of a chemical used to treat wooden pallets that transport and store packaging materials. The health effects of this compound have not been well studied, but McNeil said that so far, to date all of the reported adverse reactions have been temporary and non-serious. (more…)

New York Consumers Warned Boiled Horse Mackerel May Pose Botulism Risk

Consumers in New York who purchased Boiled Horse Mackerel sold by Bao Ding Seafood of New York City have been warned not to consume the product. The Boiled Horse Mackerel is being recalled because of a potential botulism risk. Anyone who has this product should return it to the place of purchase.

The potential botulism problem was discovered by the New York State Dept. of Agriculture and Market food inspector during a routine inspection. Subsequent analysis of the product by food lab personnel confirmed the fish was not eviscerated prior to processing. (more…)

National Steak and Poultry Recalls Beef Amid E. Coli Outbreak

Beef recalled by National Steak and Poultry, of Owasso, Oklahoma has been tied to an outbreak of E. coli O157 H7 in six western states.

Kowalke Family Sprouts Products Recalled Over Salmonella

Kowalke Family Sprouts alfalfa sprout products have been recalled because of potential Salmonella contamination.

Mike’s Produce, Inc. dba Kowalke Family Sprouts is voluntarily recalling the alfalfa sprout products after receiving notification that a surveillance sample taken at a retail location with a June 21 sell-by date tested positive for Salmonella. No illnesses have been linked to the recalled sprouts. (more…)

More Dried Milk Products Recalled Over Salmonella Worries

More food firms have recalled dry milk products over concerns they may be tainted with Salmonella. The dried milk in these products was supplied by Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, which issued a recall of dried milk and other items because of potential Salmonella contamination.

E. coli Associated with Cookie Dough In 30 States

At least 70 people across the country have been sickened with E. coli O157:H7 associated with frozen, prepackaged Nestle Toll House cookie dough.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the outbreak spans 30 states.  Of those sickened,  30  have been hospitalized,  and  7 developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).  None have died.   The majority of those sickened – 66%  – are under the age of 19, and three quarters  are female. Nestle Recalls Refrigerated Toll House Cookie Dough Over E. Coli Worries

Nestle USA is recalling  all varieties of Nestle Toll House prepackaged refrigerated cookie dough, over concerns it may be tainted with  E. coli O157:H7.

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) advises that if consumers have any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their home that they throw them away. Cooking the dough is not recommended because consumers might get the bacteria on their hands and on other cooking surfaces. (more…)

Oregon Company Recalls 39,000+ Lbs of Ground Beef Over E. Coli Worries

More than 39,000 lbs of ground beef is being recalled by SP Provisions of Portland, Oregon because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7,  according to the  U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.  When a bout of E. coli is serious, victims sometimes require kidney transplants. They may also have scarred intestines that cause lasting digestive difficulty. Even E. coli patients who supposedly recovered can experience long-term health problems later on, as it is estimated that 10 percent of E. coli sufferers develop a life-threatening complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS, where their kidneys and other organs fail. Peanut Butter Recalled in Latest Salmonella Outbreak

A salmonella outbreak has resulted in another peanut butter recall.  This time, King Nut Companies Inc. is recalling peanut butter sold under the King Nut and Pride Label’s after one container was found to be tainted with salmonella.

This would not be the first time tainted peanut butter has been implicated in a salmonella outbreak.  In February 2007, another salmonella outbreak prompted a recall of ConAgra’s Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butters. Those tainted peanut butters were  ultimately blamed for  600 cases of salmonella poisoning across the country. ConAgra faulted a leaky roof and malfunctioning sprinkler system at its production facility for causing the Salmonella contamination. The plant in Sylvester, Georgia was closed due to the recall, but reopened later that summer. (more…)
