Ohio Fracking Wastewater Injection Wells Closed After Quakes

Some Ohio fracking injection wells have been closed after earthquakes were linked to hydraulic fracturing activities. Ohio is the latest state in a growing number of locations that have seen potential links between increased seismic activity and fracking activities.

According to a number of news outlets, there have been 11 earthquakes near a Youngstown injection well used for the disposal of fracking wasterwater the since March; this weekend’s 4-point quake prompted an immediate shutdown the well, said The Wall Street Journal. Development of such injection wells is on the rise in Ohio, as they are needed to manage the increasing amounts of fracking wastewater being transported to the state from nearby Pennsylania. (Injection wells are different than drilling wells that involve actually fracking for natural gas).

After a 2.7-magnitude earthquake was reported on December 24, regulators in Ohio asked D&L Energy Inc.—the company that operates the Youngstown, Ohio well, to stop their wastewater injection activities, said The Journal. According to Andy Ware, deputy director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, more than half of the fracking fluid injected into the Youngstown well was imported from Pennsylvania.

After Saturday’s 4.0-magnitude earthquake, a moratorium was placed on all fracking injections within five miles of the well, said The Journal. There is no evidence of earthquake activity in the area prior to fracking; however, said Ware, “While we couldn’t say for sure that there’s a direct causation between the injection well and the earthquakes, we thought it better to be overly cautious,” wrote The Journal. Industry claims the activities are unrelated. “I can’t wait to see the results,” said Ben Lupo, chief executive of D&L Energy, in an interview last month when asked about testing to determine if D&L’s fracking activities were linked to the recent wave of earthquakes, wrote The Journal. “I really want to know if it is, which I doubt very much.”

At least one seismologist involved in the investigation disagrees, saying that operation of the injection well likely caused the 11 quakes in the Youngstown area, wrote The Daily News. John Armbruster of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, pointed out that similar injection wells in other areas in Ohio as well as in Arkansas and Oklahoma have been suspected in recent quakes, said the Daily News.

Brine by the thousands of gallons had been injected on a daily basis into the Youngstown well, which opened in 2010, said The Daily News. In addition to closing the Youngstown well, four inactive wells in that well’s five-mail radius were closed. Meanwhile, said Armbruster, “The earthquakes will trickle on as a kind of a cascading process once you’ve caused them to occur,” he said. “This one year of pumping is a pulse that has been pushed into the ground, and it’s going to be spreading out for at least a year,” wrote The Daily News.
