Bill to Ban Fracking in NJ on Christies Desk

On Wednesday, the New Jersey legislature sent a bill to Governor Chris Christie which will ban natural gas drilling that involves fracking. The measure passed the state Senate 32-1 and the Assembly 56-11, reported Bloomberg. If Governor Christie signs the bill, it will make New Jersey the first to institute a statewide ban on hydraulic fracturing in the U.S. Although New Jersey does not produce natural gas, the legislature is worried about communities located on the Utica Shale situated northwest. Since December, Chesapeake Energy Corp. and other gas companies have leased property to drill wells in the Utica formation. In February, drilling

company Range Resources Corp. created a well in the formation located in Pennsylvania estimated to produce 4.4 million cubic feet of natural gas daily, says Bloomberg. The state has a legitimate concern since there has been a 20 percent increase of gas output within the past five years from formations once considered impenetrable. “We want to get this in place so that New Jersey will be off-limits,” said Assemblywoman Connie Wagner. Moreover, the rising controversy over spills which have contaminated water wells has prompted the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to seek stricter regulations on drilling near the Delaware River, reported the Bloomberg. The N.J. legislature says the chemicals used in the drilling process “can suddenly and in an uncontrolled manner be introduced into the surface waters and ground water of the State,” said the N.J. legislature. The legislature defended their position against drilling by referring to a spill in Clearfield, County, Pa., which occurred June 10, 2010. The spill released drilling fluid “75 feet into the air for 16 hours,” reported Bloomberg. State lawmakers are certain the ban is necessary to protect residents and the environment. Wagner defended the measure saying neighboring states, specifically Pennsylvania, embraced natural gas drilling but never created regulations to control the damages.
